We have answered some of the most commonly asked questions about taking piano lessons.
Of course! I am willing to teach beginners of any age and have lots of varied and fun teaching materials to help you along the way. I believe that anybody is able to understand music and can quickly learn to play with the right teacher. My aim is to set any beginners off on the right path from the outset.
I have a lot of experience teaching both younger and older children in a 1:1 setting, and I really do find it rewarding. I believe it's great to start children off learning and understanding music, as it can help them in all aspects of education, and not just behind the piano! I will adapt every lesson to suit each child, making them exciting, fun and engaging, hopefully leaving them with a long-lasting love of music.
I teach most of my lessons from a dedicated teaching space in Southampton SO14 5BQ. I am also a mobile piano tutor so can travel to you to teach the piano should you prefer to learn at home. Learning from home provides a familiar environment for new pupils, and I find it is the best way to work with my pupils and their busy schedules. If preferred, I do have a comfortable environment to teach in at my teaching space located in my teaching space. A small charge may be incurred by those who live slightly further afield requiring lessons at home, in order to help cover travel expenses. If this is the case, a quote will be given well in advance of lessons.
This is not compulsory. A lot of students will play purely for enjoyment and that is very important! There is absolutely no obligation to do graded exams, and I will never push a student to take grades if that is not the way they want to learn the piano! Lessons are very flexible and I will also make sure students are playing the music that they find engaging - whatever style this may be. If however, you do want to do graded exams, I am very familiar with the curriculum and can guide you through the process.
Not at all. I am very happy to bring my portable digital piano to your lessons for you to use. Having access to a piano or keyboard, however, is very beneficial for practice and progress between lessons. I am very happy to advise on the purchase of a piano if required.
I have a lot of teaching material that I can bring to my first lesson with you. Usually, I will have a quick chat with you before lessons start, so I can see what you'd like to achieve out of our time together. I will happily advise you on music to purchase after our first few lessons.
If you are unable to make a lesson, I request that you give me 24 hours notice. We can then simply rearrange the lesson for a more convenient time, or hold off until your next scheduled lesson. Unfortunately, if less than 24 hours notice is given, the full lesson amount will be charged.
I would be delighted to help you to play the piano, for more information simply get in touch.
